Past time.

When I asked my husband to build it years ago we had kids’ towels, floats and toys that were being dropped and draped all over the place.  The rack he constructed out of PVC pipe worked beautifully to corral all that pool related stuff.

But the kids haven’t lived here for some time now and the rack outlived its usefulness. Recently, my husband actually started hanging his stinky, sweaty garden work clothes on it.

Not a pretty look.

I reminded him we had hooks hidden away in a corner that he could hang his stuff on instead..

I gently broke it to him that it was time to drag the rack out to the curb, which he did ..

He taped a sign on it that read; “rack for pool toys, $10, leave money on porch.” And there it sat with no takers for half the day.

My poor husband.. I get it.

He was the one who drove to Home Depot, bought the pipes, cut’ em and glued ’em…

this was his creation and it was great..

and so useful..

in its time.

Those of you who follow this blog know what a long-term, multi-tiered project it’s been trimming down our “nest” now that the “birds” have grown and flown. Tough decisions to let go of things we no longer need are made even more difficult when we ascribe a sentimental or monetary value to them that others do not share. It’s been a complex, often emotional process.

I explained to my husband that we had to let the rack go..for free.. preferably before the trash men came and crushed it in their truck.

I wrote up a new sign..

Someone saw it and took it just in the nick of time. I hope it works out for them as well as it did for us.

Everyone has so much stuff nowadays that it is sometimes even hard to give away nice, useful things.

It’s true..I had six, beautiful plain oak takers. Wonderful Ethan Allen, beachy look coffee one wants a deal… Now if you’re giving it away..sure.

  2. Scaling back, letting go of things once valued is no easy task. This was a wonderful idea (the pool rack, I mean, not letting go of stuff – though that’s a great idea too haha).

I so completely understand!!!! We gave away so much stuff when our three kids moved on….now, though? NOW? I am addicted to online sales. Not good. I salute you for your giving away and caution you about those “sales”!
