I want my Fahrvergnügen back!

Memories of my youth fall into categories for me; Christmases, vacations, school etc..

and then there’s the back seat.

I have an entire ‘memory file’ full of terrifying recollections of me sitting in the back seat of cars that were going way, way, way too fast. There were no speed limits where I grew up, so other limits were always being tested: the limits of a vehicle’s capabilities, the limits of a driver’s abilities..

Restraint was a matter of personal choice and no one ever seemed to choose it. Once, after a long evening at a restaurant which no doubt included plenty of alcohol, my dad and my uncle piled their families into their respective cars and literally raced each other home..we’re talking Monte Carlo style.

I’m 58 years old, and to this day sitting in the ‘back seat’ of anything that’s moving (planes, trains, automobiles, kayaks, hayride wagons..😏) can send me into a sweaty panic.

For people like me, who aren’t comfortable as “passengers,” this past year has proven to be a rough ride. 2020 unceremoniously booted us out of the drivers’ seats of our own lives and shoved us into dark, windowless trunks. We kept moving alright, but we had no idea where we were going; the ultimate nightmare for control freaks.

I still have no idea where the road will lead in 2021 and quite honestly, after all these months, I’ve made peace with that. I’m also aware that God is ultimately in control of E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G and FOR SURE I’m A-OK with that too! At this point I just want out of the trunk.. I want my fahrvergnügen back!

So happy New Year everyone, here’s to getting back behind the wheel.
